If you're seeing the error “device already joined” when trying to access your Zoom session, don’t worry, it’s usually a quick to fix.
We allow only one device per registration link.
The most common cause of this error is an AI note-taker (such as Otter.ai, Fireflies, or similar tools) joining the Zoom session automatically using your unique link.
When this happens, Zoom treats the note-taker as your active device, which blocks you from joining.
AI note-takers can automatically:
Even though we don’t restrict note-takers, Zoom itself enforces the one-device rule per link
In some cases, re-joining will replace the device or app that is already connected and allow you into the session. Zoom supports switching an active session to another device, which disconnects the previous one.
If you use Otter.ai, Fireflies, or another AI meeting assistant, disable it before joining the session. These tools may auto-join and take your place in the meeting. Otter specifically documents that its Notetaker can automatically join Zoom meetings.
If this keeps happening, review any apps connected to your Zoom or calendar and turn off auto-join for note-taking tools. Zoom Community discussions also point to connected Otter/calendar integrations as a common cause of repeated join issues.
